The Modern Metropolis

New York City is today an incredibly complex place, with millions of people and millions of stories. One of the greatest joys and challenges of being human is negotiating this complexity, and finding ways to contribute to the rich and evolving narrative that is our urban landscape. Cities are also where we experience the biggest challenges our species faces in the form of climate change and environmental degradation. They are also where we have the most potential for solving these problems by innovative design and technology, and building a resilient future. In this article I’ll be discussing the The ups and downs, The wins and losses, or the regular life in a modern metropolis.

New York City is a place of endless opportunity and promise, but it is also a place of endless pressure and competition. The city is a place of endless stimulation and temptation, but it is also a place of endless debt and worry. The city is a place where everything is possible, but it is also a place where everything is dangerous. No matter where you came from, what you look like, or who you are, the city will make your blood boil, your skin crawl, and your heart pound. The modern metropolis is a vast and complex place, a place that extends far beyond the four walls we share with our friends and family. It is a place where we work, live, play, and learn. It is a place that shapes who we are and how we navigate society and the world around us. But, like any other complex place, the modern metropolis is also a place of great diversity; a place where we can find joy in the simplest of things, and hardship in the most simple of circumstances.

It’s no secret that city life is exciting, vibrant, and exhilarating. The constant energy and bustle of city streets are enough to keep even the most restless soul on their toes. Cities are the places where we find culture, live music, and entertainment. They are the places where we find new experiences, and the means to create the futures we want. City life. It’s exciting, it’s vibrant, it’s fast-paced. It’s where the action is. It’s where the world comes together. The space that Manhattan occupies is complex. It’s the beating heart of America, the center of finance, the center of art and culture, the center of technology. It’s a unique place, unlike anywhere else. The modern metropolis is a place of excitement, energy, and constant activity. It’s a place where you can find almost anything you want, and discover new things you never imagined. There is a seemingly endless variety of fun things to do in the city, ranging from the conventional (going to the theater, visiting museums, eating at fancy restaurants) to the unconventional (partying at underground nightclubs, exploring secret passageways, finding new and exciting restaurants and bars).

Yes, the Modern Metropolis is fun and exciting, But it’s not always fun, exciting adventures, and good food. Every good thing has a downside to it. The upside is that we have this amazing city but the downside is all the negative impacts this city has on mental health, how expensive the living costs are and dangers that are presented with crime levels always rising.

In the 1990s, New York City was often portrayed as a “dangerous” city. It was a place of fear and crime, with a reputation for being unsafe. This still continues now. This is due to the very large population and diversity. But also its due to the poverty rates also being through the roof, tying them with the Bronx being the most dangerous borough right alongside Brooklyn but also being the poorest boroughs. This becomes a burden in city life because it interferes with daily life. You have to be careful when coming back home from work. You have to be careful when getting groceries or just coming from the park. As the sun sets across the city, a world of lights, of people, of sounds rises. The modern metropolis is a city of violence and fear, of crime and terror. It is a city of opportunity, of hope, and of wonder. The modern metropolis is a place of dichotomy, a division,  of being at once both the most exciting and most terrifying place in the world.

Violence isn’t the only type of crime that occurs in New York City. A very unnoticed crime that happens every day and gets worse by the second is overpriced living costs. Manhattan is often associated with glamour, but for most New Yorkers, the overpriced rent is the least appealing aspect of the city. Rent is so high in Manhattan that many people are forced to live in neighborhoods where the crime rate is higher and the access to jobs and public transit is less convenient. Even for those who can afford it, the high cost of living in Manhattan is difficult to bear.

Another issue is trash has become a crisis in our cities. A crisis that is threatening to overwhelm us, and forcing us to question the very basis of how we live and how we consume. Our cities are flooded with garbage; mountains of it, stretching as far as the eye can see, especially now that many garbage men are retiring and moving to different jobs or not working at all due to the mask mandate. The future mayor should have trash at the top of his priorities. Especially around the less fortunate areas that need a little more boost. Also not just in the streets but underground. The MTA is just as dirty as the topside. Covid brought some attention to how dirty the subway is. But now that regular life is coming back they should stop the regular cleaning during the night. Understanding this is the first step toward finding a solution.

Although there are so many negatives of city life, there are also many positives. But it’s not always going to be just ups or just downs. You’re going to be somewhat in the middle. Inconvenient commute to work, but seeing many cool things along the way. Bills being very expensive, but having just enough to hang with your friends that weekend. I feel like most people are so one sided because the good or bad things project really loudly. They both stand out and whatever you experience more often is how you’re going to feel. For example when you’re really struggling financially that period of time, you really feel it. Because you might want pizza with some wings that night but you can’t get it due to the situation. On the other hand when you get that pizza and those wings you feel great.

In conclusion, Cities are complex and dynamic environments, with a constant flow of people, goods, and information moving through them. They are also a place where people live, and where cultures are built and shared. The modern metropolis, then, is a place where we can observe the beauty and diversity of the world in one place. It is a place where we can observe the past, present, and future in one place. New York City is one of the most amazing and beautiful places on earth. But without a doubt the city has its flaws. Hopefully the reader was able to connect with points that were made if not have more of an understanding of city life and city struggles.
